Over the years the Speedster has become one of our most prolific sellers and we can now offer the car in a self-build option. This car is based on the V.W Beetle using many parts from the chassis, engine, steering to the running gear. What you have here in this kit is all the body panels and the sub-chassis which attaches to the main beetle chassis. The Beetle chassis does need shortening by 11 inches or 275mm to have the correct wheelbase for the Speedster. We can shorten your chassis for you if you prefer please call for cost. If it would be helpful we could get one of our Metalwork team to call you and run through what you need to do, it’s not that difficult.
You will need to purchase a VW Beetle to build this iconic car. This is what we call a donor car in our business. With regards to which Beetle (donor) you will need, we suggest a swing axle Beetle with 4 stud fixing with a 12-volt system. These date from 1968 – 1972 which are the normal Beetles. The super Beetle can be used, you will need a 1302 for the IRS suspension. Although you will need to purchase another frame head which will need to be changed on the 1302 chassis.
If you like the idea of upgrading the front and rear suspension and maybe adding front disc brakes to your build, then we can describe how that is done also.
Most of our clients purchase the speedster build manual from our webshop. This gives you a real insight into your build. The cost of this is £29.50 +vat which is refundable when you then purchase the kit.
We continuously have cars under construction, you are welcome to visit the factory and have a chat to the technicians, these guys are building them daily. We now try to carry all the stock required to build the 356 speedsters. We do try to have a demonstration model available for test drives. Please call for availability.
