This is the very first of the Third generation Ford Thunderbirds finished in Corinthian White with Spanish red interior. Affectionately known as the “Bullitt Birds” these sleekly styled luxury cars took much of their styling from the “Space Race” that was so passionately being pursued at the time. The sleek lines were far more pleasing than its predecessor and the “Afterburners” finishing off the rear fenders really reminded any driver following the latest Thunderbird that it was capable of “Rocket-ship” performance. The new 390 cu inch 6.4litre FE series V8 engine was the only power unit available in 1961, one of the most distinctive features of the Gen 3 T Birds was the “Swing-away” steering wheel which when in park, slides over 18 inches to the right giving much easier access to the cockpit for the driver. The ’61 was one of the first cars to be fitted with a dim dip rear mirror, its standard Power Steering and Brakes plus Reversing Lights were expensive options on its competitors models. This Southern Californian import also features other options, Electric Windows, Fender Skirts, White Wall Tyres and Cragar Chrome Wheels. These T Birds are wonderfully comfortable cruisers and a spectacular show stopper in any car park and really offer fantastic value when compared to its brother the iconic Mustang. The example features recent new shocks front and rear, a complete new exhaust system recent tyres and a spectacular engine compartment for a 54 year old car.
