1923 Austin 7 Chummy

So just like any other day during one of our buying trips to Arizona I found myself combing through the hundreds of private ads looking for Mustangs or anything on our WANTED list of Muscle Cars when I suddenly came across a very unusual advertisement. To my great surprise the seller, a charming man by the name of Gordon from Prescott AZ confirmed he had a 1923 Austin Chummy for sale.
We made arrangements to meet at his beautiful home high up in the pine forested hills outside the city of Prescott and there she was, sitting under a four post ramp beneath Gordon’s 1964 Chevy Nova Drag car where she had sat for eleven or so years since he drove her to his home.
Gordon is a true “Car Guy” with a great collection of American Classics from the 50’s through to the 80’s and he told me the story of the little Austin and how a Doctor had used the Chummy to carry out his house calls around the city of Gilbert in the South Central area of the Phoenix Valley for many years. On his passing his house keeper inherited the house and possessions along with the charming little Austin 7 Chummy.
Over time the lady concerned, a friend of Gordon’s, became unwell and faced with rising medical bills sold the Austin to Gordon to help with her care. From the collection of historic badges in the Chummy it was clear she had originated from the South of England and must have been shipped to the States over 40 years ago.
The B Type Body with the very early features including Scooped Scuttle and narrow vertical edged doors clearly match the Arizonan Title date of June 1923, and indeed this is the date shown on the new V5 registration document. Since the Chummy arrived back in the UK we have carried out a general re commissioning and in order to comply with import regulations the Austin has passed an MOT which she needed in order to be registered. She runs well and starts very reliably on a good magneto and dynamo which have clearly been overhauled. Body & paint are very nice indeed and the general condition is extremely good and would allow the new owner to enjoy using the Chummy whilst continuing to enhance her quaint engineering in the way he or she might see fit. The Hood and Hood Cover are relatively new and the interior is in very good order throughout, a period wicker basket that came with her, contains some spares and a collection of old Austin Owners Club Badges.
Interestingly we managed to forensically reveal the three numbers stamped within the rear crossmember, these match the numbers found on the front passenger side chassis section and the engine itself, making it original to the chassis. These numbers date to early 1925 which, after a very interesting, detailed and informative discussion with an UK expert and specialist, apparently make this very rare and much sought after little Tourer even more exciting! We will be delighted to receive your enquiry and perhaps the opportunity to learn even more about this lovely piece of British Motoring `History
